Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away! We are in the midst of the season of eating. It starts with Halloween and seems to not end until about Valentine’s Day. It’s the time of year we tend to pack on a few extra pounds to keep us warm for the winter…at least that’s what we tell ourselves. But really the average weight gain during the holiday season is about 1 pound. One pound may not sound like a lot, but even gaining “only” 1 pound a year every holiday season adds up. After 25 years you’ve gained 25 extra pounds!

The best way to keep the weight off during the holidays is to moderate intake and don’t over indulge.

  • Instead of getting one of every dessert, try halving or quartering a variety of desserts with a family member or friend.
  • Fill half of your plate with roasted vegetables and salads and make sure to get adequate protein!
  • Try to limit the dressing and potato dishes if possible.
  • Do NOT restrict yourself from a certain food because it’s “bad” for you. Indulge and get half a serving of the food from what you would normally get. This way you can still enjoy the food and still feel good about it!
  • But most importantly…hydrate, hydrate, HYDRATE! You will be eating a lot of high sodium foods and it will be important to drink adequate amounts of water to help your body regulate itself, and process the food from the wonderful Thanksgiving meal you just ate. This will help decrease bloat and give your body what it needs to stabilize itself.

If you can’t keep your hand out of the pumpkin pie, weight that is generally put on quickly like this is typically easy to lose. You just have to put in the effort! This may be a busy time of year, but it’s not too busy to sneak in 10-15 minutes of physical activity each day. If your schedule is too hectic for even that, or if you just want to up your game, try these tips to sneak in some extra exercise during this busy time of year!

  • Park in one of the furthest parking spots at the grocery store while shopping for your Thanksgiving feast and power walk to the door.
  • Take the stairs at the mall instead of the escalator while shopping for Christmas presents.
  • Do calf raises while preparing Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
  • Do a quick set of squats while waiting on water to boil.
  • Use more intensity when cleaning your house for holiday guests.
  • Take a walk around the airport while waiting on flights to see family instead of sitting around…time permitting of course.
  • March in place while watching the Thanksgiving Day parade.
  • Play a game of football in the yard after dinner, or go for a family stroll.
