As some of you may know I have three little (or not so little) fur babies and today was one of their birthdays! My sweet Aussie, Bear, turned one year old today and to celebrate I wanted to make him a cupcake (aka pupcake). I spent a good couple of hours researching ingredients that are safe and healthy for dogs and most of the pupcake recipes I found called for flour, oats, peanut butter or pumpkin purée, applesauce, carrots, apples, bananas, berries, and honey. The frosting for his little cakes was made from one part peanut butter and two parts plain yogurt.
This evening I made some pupcakes for my birthday boy and he absolutely LOVED them!! My other dog wasn’t as amused. While I was watching him chow down on his birthday surprise I got to thinking…these pupcakes are actually pretty healthy for humans and I had spent several hours looking into foods that would be good for my dog. I know a lot of people with that same mindset who don’t mind filling their bodies with fried foods, human cupcakes, cookies, hot dogs, etc. but yet would freak if their dog had any of that. If we can put that much time in effort for our dog’s, or other fur baby’s health, then why can’t we do it for our own? Your dog relies on you to take care of them and their body and you rely on yourself to take care of you and your body. So it’s up to you to read the nutrition labels, choose the grilled chicken and vegetables at dinner, have a bowl of fruit for dessert, and exercise most days of the week. It’s a piece of cake to do it for your dog and it’s a piece of cake to do it for you too!
Here is the recipe I used for Bear’s pupcakes!

Bear’s Birthday Pupcakes
- 1 egg
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1/3 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 1 cup flour
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cupcake tin with cupcake liners and set aside.
- Mix together egg, banana, honey, oil, peanut butter, and carrots.
- Add the flour, oats, baking soda, and vanilla to the wet ingredients. Mix until combined.
- Scoop batter into the cupcake tin filling each liner about 2/3 of the way full. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
- While pupcakes are baking, mix together the yogurt and peanut butter until combined and refrigerate until pupcakes are ready for frosting.
- When pupcakes are done allow them to cool completely before frosting.
- Frost your pupcakes and you and your pup enjoy!!!
