Hello everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! It was a busy one for me since yesterday was my fiance’s birthday, so I am sorry to say I have no recipe for you this week. But I do have some information for you on this root spice, turmeric. I have been taking a class this summer over neutraceuticals and dietary supplements and my mom and I were talking about turmeric and looking into if it is actually beneficial. Before getting into the nitty gritty business on the validity of turmeric’s benefits, let’s talk about what turmeric actually is.

Turmeric is a root that is closely related to ginger and is yellow in color. It is commonly used in curry powder and is also used to help color foods and cosmetics. This spice has been getting a lot of attention lately for its potential benefits of reducing inflammation, controlling blood sugar, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This spice has been used as a medication in various countries, especially in Asia, to help improve breathing problems and decrease pain and fatigue for many many years.

There have been several studies done, but there is no strong evidence that turmeric does reduce inflammation. With that being said, there are several preliminary studies that indicate turmeric may be beneficial for reducing the number of heart attacks after bypass surgery, controlling knee pain, and it also showed a reduction in skin irritation in individuals receiving radiation therapy. Turmeric is safe to take, however high doses may cause stomach irritation.

Seeing as how there are next to no negative side effects to using turmeric, it is definitely worth giving it a try! I just wouldn’t rely on it to reduce symptoms, but if you do experience a reduction in pain or other symptoms that’s great! Here are a few ways you can try adding turmeric to your diet:

  • Add turmeric to tea
  • Make a curry dish
  • Add it to a smoothie
  • Season your vegetables with it
  • Sprinkle some in milk
  • Make your own mustard
  • Add a dash into soup
  • Mix it with honey
  • Sprinkle over a salad
